Franklin High School Band Alumni:

I have many favorite music bands/groups that I grew up listening to. One of them is called:

RETURN TO FOREVER

This American Jazz Fusion Band was founded by pianist Chick Corea in 1971. Of course, his bassist of the group was Stanley Clarke! One of many of my Bass Guitar idol's. Spain is one of my favorite songs from "Return To Forever", and I'm not sure if I perform this song in High School (Chicago Vocational High School) or at Kentucky State University! Anyway, Franklin High School Jazz Ensemble performed "Spain" at the 2006 Bob Kames Jazz Festival. They did a wonderful job on it! [School year: 2005-2006]

Enjoy!

Franklin High School Saber Band Alumni! At the 2006 Bob Kames Jazz Festival, the students had to take "Pick Up The Pieces" and do an arrangement from the music that the Festival had given us. All bands in the Jazz Festival had to come up with their own arrangement. The Franklin High School Jazz Ensemble won Best Arrangement for " Pick Up The Pieces". Their creativity was very impressive! I just love this groove they created for the beginning!

This is a special trip down memory lane Franklin High School Band Alumni!

This was the Four  year Anniversary of my first year (1999) teaching band at the High School level. We had under twenty students enrolled during the summer of 1999, and when school started in September, we had close to eighty enrolled in Band. As each year went by, the band continue to grow, and this 2003 Senior Class stayed with me all four years. Forty-two freshman band students started with me in 1999, and Forty-two Seniors was there in 2003 to help celebrate four years of success, growth, and achievement! Thank you for a job well done Senior Band Class of 2003!

Franklin High School Band Alumni! This trip back on memory lane takes me to my first big test as a High School Band Director. THE MARCHING BAND!

I remembered my High School days at Chicago Vocational High School (CVS) that we loved Marching Band and looked forward to performing each football season. That upcoming school year (1999-2000) at FHS, the retention of students enrolled for Band dropped tremendously especially our students entering 9th grade. With a survey taking with the eighth grade band students, the Marching Band was the biggest reason for not continuing in Band at the High School level. They had no interest in Marching. When the High School Band job became vacant, Ms. Trembath and I talked, and we concluded that I should give the High School a try. We might be able to get some of the students back if they knew Mr. Booth would be their Band Director. Still, the same problem existed! How do you get students to love Marching Band? I banked on changing the performance concept of Marching Band from Competitive to Show style, and arranging music that they hear all the time on the radio with emphasis on entertaining your audience which was FHS student body! We only prepare to perform for Homecoming and The Milwaukee Christmas Parade. As I would tell my Band Students: "Who say that you can't perform a Rap song in a Marching Band"? Anyway, the rest is history and the band enrollment increased each year. The students seemed to look forward to the next Marching Band Season. I would like to say Thank you to all the students that school year who gave the band program a chance, and believing that together we can have fun performing!

Enjoy!

Well Franklin High School Band Alumni! After the Homecoming Rap Show #1 (1999-2000), I wondered what would the Saber Band look like in four years! Fast Forward to Homecoming 2002, and all I have to say is WOW!!! We gotten so big! I also had the problem of not having enough band uniforms for everyone, so the B.I.B uniforms was created for this show. Being short on uniforms is probably a great problem to have, because so many students wanted to participate in the Band program. Especially Marching Band! I had the Band guessing on what songs I would arrange for them before they came to Band Camp! The Band loved my Arrangements which made the show much more fun to perform! This is also Mr. Booth's first Senior Band Class that stayed in the program for four years!

I use to be part of this great Army band (1985-1996), so they invited me to sit in and play a little Bass with them! This was a fun night!!!!
